Dry Skin Tips

Dry skin giving you the blues?

Here are some tips to help you overcome dry skin any time of year:

  • Add a hydrating toner. Contrary to what some think not all toners are drying or exfoliating. There are lots of hydrating toners and essences available now. Tips for using a hydrating toner; apply toner to skin and while skin is still damp apply your serum or moisturizer. This will help provide extra hydration to your skin. My longtime favorite is the Essence Toner from Le Mieux. Why do I love it? Because it’s full of hyaluronic acid, minerals, peptides, and beta glucan for powerhouse hydration. In stock at Skin Philosophy in Downtown Livermore.

  • Add a hydrating serum to your current routine. Two great ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Need help finding one? Let me know and I’d be happy to make a recommendation.

  • Add a richer or thicker moisturizer. Look for something with glycerin, hyaluronic acid, beta glucan, and/or ceramides. The moisturizer does not need to contain all of these ingredients, these are just some hydrating ingredients to look for.

  • Back off on your actives. Instead of using your products with active ingredients like retinol or beta hydrxoy acids, and alpha hydroxy acids (BHA’s and AHA’s) every day use them every other day or every two days.

  • Avoid long hot showers as this can dehydrate your skin. I know, I know, I love a good hot shower too so if you can’t avoid them try to shorten the time and be sure to use a body oil or lotion afterwards to help replace lost moisture.

  • Another option would be to take a bath instead of a shower. Add some epsom salt or hydrating bubble bath and your skin will thank you.

  • Apply products to damp skin. Applying products to damp skin helps to retain moisture in the skin.

  • Apply occlusive products on top of moisturizer (aka slugging). Feeling excessively dry? Apply a very thin layer of an occlusive product on top of your moisturizer at night to help lock in moisture and slow down the skins natural process of TEWL (trans edpidermal water loss).

  • Book a hydrating facial treatment with your favorite Esthetician and have them review your products with you to make sure you are using the correct products for your skin care concerns.
